30.September.2011:-Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta’s defence team has rubbished the prosecution’s allegations on the outlawed Mungiki sect meeting held at State House.
The team termed claims made by the International Criminal Court Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo as unfounded and ridiculous.
“And as for the Mungiki going around in army trucks up to State House, it is like a bunch of London rioters in a red double deck bus, taking the 38 from East London down to Victoria station and driving in to Buckingham Palace on their way. It is exactly the same scene, it is inconceivable,” said Uhuru’s lead counsel Steven Kay QC.
On allegations that Uhuru and Head of Public Service Francis Muthaura held a meeting on January 3 at Nairobi Club where they discussed Mungiki attacks, transportation and financing, Kay said “one stands back and draws breath”.
Kay described the club as an English resort where visitors sign in and nobody is allowed to use a mobile phone.
“The club is equivalent to Carlton Club in London,” he said.
ODM had called for mass action at Uhuru Park but this was stopped by security officers who barricaded the venue and stopped the youth from leaving their homes.
The court was told Uhuru stayed at home for security reasons and to watch what was going on.
The defence also dismissed claims that Uhuru attended a meeting that was held at Blue Post Hotel in Thika to plot and finance attacks.
It is here that money was allegedly given to middle level Mungiki leaders for attacks in Nakuru and Naivasha.
It is the defence’s case that Uhuru did not attend the meeting and only clergymen/professionals were present at the function where donations were given to assist the Internally Displaced People (IDPs).
Exhibits of receipts showing what people donated out of their own volition were tabled in court.
