30.September.2011:-The Central Organization of Trade Unions – COTU has accused the government, the National Environment Management Authority and the Nairobi City Council of allowing industries to operate in residential areas.
Addressing the press in Nairobi Thursday, COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli said corruption in government had led to mushrooming of industries in residential areas putting many lives at risk.
Atwoli claimed that licenses for industries in these areas have been issued without an environmental impact assessment.
He appealed to the government to cancel licenses of all factories located in the residential areas that pose health risks to the population.
The visibly angry trade unionist accused the city of sending untrained staff at Shauri Moyo Wednesday to handle the poisonous gas leakage from a factory.
56 people were admitted at Kenyatta National hospital after inhaling the poisonous gas that leaked from a scrap metal workshop.
